Movie Release Types and their Quality

The following is a list of the different release types/quality of movies you might come across.

While it might seem confusing at first, the information that uploaders include with the filename help you choose the right type of movie to download..

Blu-Ray Disc releases

Possible Labels: BDRip / 1080p.Blu-Ray.x264 720p / Blu-Ray.x264 / BDR

The quality of these downloads is usually the best, and is slightly better than DVD-Rip releases.  However, the size of the file is slightly larger and will take a little longer to download.

example of a Blu-Ray Disc torrent filename:

How.To.Train.Your.Dragon.2010.720p.BluRay.x264-CBGB
(note: CBGB is the name of the uploader)

DVD releases

Possible Labels: DVDRip / DvDrip

This release is a copy of the retail DVD version of a film.  Typically, you will want to download a DVDRip, as it provides the best audio and video quality.

example of a DVD torrent filename:
Get Him to the Greek (2010) DVDRip XviD-MAX
(note: MAX is the name of the uploader)

DVD SCREENERS

Possible Labels: SCR / SCREENER /DVDSCR / DVDSCREENER

These are the type of releases given to movie reviewers, where a message is overlaid on top of the picture, such as
"The film you are watching is a promotional copy, if you purchased this film at a retail store please contact 1-800-NO-COPIES to report it."
The quality of these movies are slightly lower in quality than official DVD releases.  Sometimes DVD screeners may contain different content than the final DVD release, so there might be added/deleted scenes, etc.

example of a DVD Screener torrent filename:
The.Twilight.Saga.Eclipse.2010.DVDSCR.XviD-PrisM
(note: PrisM is the name of the uploader)

R5 releases

Possible Labels: R5

These releases differ from normal releases in that they are a direct Telecine transfer of the film.  This basically means that the video quality will be close to a standard DVD release, but sometimes the audio of R5 releases might be of lower quality.

example of a R5 torrent filename:
Wall Street Money Never Sleeps (2010) R5 XviD-MAX

(note: MAX is the name of the uploader)

TELESYNC releases
Possible Labels: TS / TELESYNC

Usually, the only difference between this and a Cam version is better audio quality.  The video on a Telesync release is still recorded with a video camera, but the audio is usually recorded separately, which results in slightly better quality.

example of a R5 torrent filename:
Step Up 2010 TS XVID FEEL-FREE
(note: FEEL-FREE is the name of the uploader)

CAMERA releases

Label: CAMRip / CAM

If you see a movie labeled with this, it means that the it was recorded with a video camera in a movie theater.  You will almost always want to stay away from these types because their audio and video quality is very poor.  The only advantage of CAMs is that these are copies of movies that are currently playing in the cinema, and are the first to be released on the internet.

example of a Camera torrent filename:
The Social Network CAM XViD - IMAGiNE
(note: IMAGINE is the name of the uploader)
